.ie domains operate in a different manner to com domains, which are awarded on a first come first served basis. Irish domain names (.ie) are awarded by the IEDR once you have proven you are entitled to the domain name you are applying for. All applications for a .ie must have a real and substantive connection to Ireland, either by being a registered business here or having trading links with Irish customers. The documentation required (see here) depends on what type of a company/organisation you are. When you submit a registration request for a .ie domain name, you may be required to produce supporting information to validate your application. Usually, if your company number and/or business number can be verified online no further documentation will be required.
